Lectures on American and Local Jewish History

 

The 16th annual Festival of Jewish Learning will include free lectures dedicated to the 350th anniversary of Jewish communal life in North America . Local author, Don Harrison, will begin this theme at Ohr Shalom Synagogue on Tues., Jan. 18 at noon by discussing “The Four ‘Roses’: Stories of Louis Rose in Early San Diego.” Mr. Harrison’s recent book Louis Rose, San Diego ’s First Jewish Settler and Entrepreneur will be available for sale and signing.

 

On Thurs., Jan 20, Dr. Joellyn Zollman will continue this thread by speaking on “New Developments in American Jewish History” at Cong. Beth Israel at noon . In this talk she will focus on the results of historical research published since the 300th anniversary celebration. Dr. Zollman received her PhD in Jewish history in 2002 from Brandeis University under Jonathan Sarna.

 

Returning to the history of local Jews, Stan and Laurel Schwartz will discuss “Life on the Edge: Early Jewish Pioneers of San Diego” at the Mission Valley Library on Wed., Jan. 26 at 12:30pm. Stan and Laurel Schwartz have been leaders of the Jewish Historical Society of San Diego since 1990.
