The 29 top performers included one high school, La Jolla, with a score of 833, and four middle schools: Marshall (869); Preuss (820); De Portola (809), and Muirlands (802). Twenty-four high performing elementary schools were: Curie (896); Bird Rock (890); Jerabek (888); Hearst (887); Dingeman (883); Benchley-Weinberger (877); Dailard (865); Tierrasanta (858); Kumeyaay (855); Holmes (848); Doyle (845); Miramar Ranch (844); Torrey Pines (836); Sunset View (835); La Jolla (829); Vista Grande (825); Hage (823); Ericson (821); Alcott (816); Sessions (811); Silver Gate (807); Sequoia (803); Hickman (801) and Perry (801).

"I am gratified that our literacy and math reforms, together with the dedication and hard work on the part of so many teachers and administrators, are bringing positive results for our students," Bersin said in a statement. The average score throughout the state was 675 for elementary schools; 657 for middle schools, and 636 for high schools. Falling below these marks in San Diego were 36 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, and 9 high schools. The total of 55 low performing schools compared to a total of 71 in 1999. -- Donald H.
