Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle today (Thursday, Jan. 27) ordered all state flags to be flown at half-staff until the last of the 31 troops killed in Wednesday’s helicopter accident in Iraq are laid to rest.   Twenty-seven of the dead were based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii-Kaneohe Bay.

“The hearts of the people of Hawai`i and across America are heavy and full of sorrow as we mourn the loss of the marines and sailor who were killed in yesterday’s tragic helicopter accident,” the governor said in a statement issued by her office in Honolulu.

”Our prayers go out to the families of these brave marines, especially those based in Kane`ohe, and we offer them our continued support and love during this difficult time.  All of these marines and the navy sailor were committed to defending freedom and helping the Iraqi people, and we are forever grateful for their sacrifices, courage and patriotism,” she said.
