"Marty Block retires from SDSU, continues as president of Community College Board," news release to SDUniverse: On December 30, 2005, Marty Block retired from SDSU after 26 years.  This spring he continues to work part-time as an annuitant in the Office of Diversity and Equity, investigating complaints of discrimination and sexual harassment.  He also continues to serve San Diego County in his elected capacity as president of the Board of Trustees of the San Diego Community College District. Since coming to SDSU in 1979 after a two-year stint as Director of Student Legal Services at Western Illinois University, Marty has served as a Director in Student Affairs, as an Assistant Dean in the College of Education, as an adjunct professor in Public Administration, the department of Management and the College of Education, as the University President’s designee on the Associated Students Council and as an acting Ombudsman. After serving eight years as Assistant Dean of the College of Education, in 1994 Marty began an eleven-year run as Director of the Office of Compliance and Policy Analysis and, then, the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities. In both roles he handled complaints of sexual harassment, discrimination, and FERPA and ADA violations.  He also reviewed and revised University policy, monitored campus disputes, managed litigation, tracked legislation and served as a resource to the administration on issues of regulatory law, constitutional law and risk management.  In 2002 he founded and has since directed the national Higher Education Law and Policy Institute, which has provided intensive professional development for more than 450 campus attorneys and senior administrators in higher education. Off campus Marty remains active in politics and community service.  He has served two four-year terms on the San Diego County Board of Education.  His service included a two-year term as President of the statewide California Association of County Boards of Education.  In 2000 Marty was first elected to serve on the Board of Trustees of the San Diego Community College District, overseeing City College, Mesa College, Miramar College and six centers for continuing education.  Marty was reelected to the Board in 2004 and last month was chosen by his board colleagues to serve a sixth term as Board President.  He also currently serves as President of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Community College Association (SDICCCA) Board Alliance and co-chairs the statewide caucus of low-funded college districts.  Nationally, Marty has served four times as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention pledged to Michael Dukakis (1988), Bill Clinton (1992 & 1996) and John Kerry (2004). Marty’s service to San Diego has included terms as Government Relations Chair for the San Diego Multiple Sclerosis Society and the United Jewish Federation as well as two terms as president of the San Diego chapter of the American Jewish Committee.  An active member of the state Bar, Marty has regularly served as a Judge Pro Tem in the San Diego Superior Court.  In addition Marty has hosted more than fifty public affairs programs on San Diego television. This semester Marty will be in the Office of Diversity and Equity (AD 228) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  He can be reached at 594-3057.  A retirement party celebrating Marty’s service to SDSU will be held on Monday, February 27th, from 1:30pm-3:00pm at Starbucks
