U.S.
to focus on the 'what ifs' during National Preparedness
Month
WASHINGTON, DC (Press Release)—The U.S. Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) announced today that more than
1,700 national, regional, state, and local organizations
will support the department by participating in National
Preparedness Month 2007. This campaign occurs annually
in September, and encourages Americans to prepare for
all types of emergencies in their homes, businesses,
schools, and communities. DHS promotes individual
emergency preparedness through the Ready Campaign and
the department’s Citizen Corps Program throughout the
year.
“Too
many individuals remain in a state of denial when it
comes to personal preparedness,” said Homeland Security
Secretary
Michael Chertoff.
“Able-bodied Americans need to be prepared to take care
of themselves and their families after an emergency, so
that first responders can focus on those who need
assistance most. With
the help of
our coalition members, we encourage Americans to get an
emergency supply kit, make a family communications plan,
and be informed about the different types of emergencies
that may affect them.”
During September, Coalition Members will share
preparedness information with their members, customers,
employees, and communities. National Preparedness Month
activities taking place throughout September (for a
complete list of events, visit
www.ready.gov)
include:

-
In New York City, the Office of
Emergency Management (OEM) will kick off National Preparedness Month
with the New York City Citizen Corps Council at seven locations
throughout the five boroughs. Various city and community partners
will be stationed near major transit hubs to distribute copies of
the Ready New York pocket-size preparedness guide, part of OEM's
Ready New York Campaign, and educate New Yorkers about ways to
prepare for emergencies. Ready New York ads will appear during the
month on subways, local newspapers, bus shelters, supermarket
circulars, and sanitation trucks. Later in September, OEM will debut
its much-anticipated Ready New York for kids guide, which will be
distributed to all New York City public school students.
-
In an effort to prepare citizens for
emergencies, Be Ready Alabama is coordinating youth “Be Ready Camps”
focused on building preparedness skills and a “Be Ready Sunday” for
faith-based organizations across the state to deliver preparedness
messages. In addition, there will be a statewide event called “Be
Ready Day” which will educate and train individuals on preparing for
emergencies, volunteer opportunities in the communities, and first
responders’ preparedness and response capabilities.
-
Several California cities including
San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara will host regional business
preparedness events during National Preparedness Month’s Business
Preparedness Week. These events will offer California business
owners and managers guidance on how to develop a business emergency
plan that can help secure their employees, operations and assets.
Senate Committee on
Homeland Security Chairman
Joe Lieberman
and Ranking Member Susan Collins, and House Committee on Homeland
Security Chairman Bennie Thompson and Ranking Member Peter King are
serving as honorary Congressional co-chairs of National Preparedness
Month 2007 and are leading the effort on Capitol Hill to increase public
awareness on the importance of emergency preparedness.
For the first time,
National Preparedness Month is focusing on different areas of emergency
preparedness.
-
September 1-8: Back-to-School (Ready Kids)
-
September 9-15: Business preparedness(Ready Business)
-
September 16-22: Multicultural preparedness(Listo)
-
September 23-30: Home and family preparedness, including pets, older
Americans and individuals with disabilities and special needs (Ready
America)
The purpose of
National Preparedness Month is to encourage Americans to prepare for
emergencies. Although significant progress has been made, there is
still a long way to go to ensure that all Americans are prepared. A
national survey conducted by The Advertising Council on behalf of
Homeland Security in July found that 66 percent of Americans believe it
is “very important” for individuals to prepare and 54 percent report
having taken some steps to prepare. The study also found progress on
emergency preparedness among specific subgroups, including: Hispanic
Americans; men, particularly fathers; and employers.

details critiques of controversial book, TV show on Middle East
WASHINGTON (Press Release)—In March 2006, Professors Stephen Walt of
Harvard and John Mersheimer of the University of Chicago, published
an inconsistent and factually incorrect paper on the influence of
the so-called "Israel Lobby". Subsequently, they were offered a
$750,000 advance for a recently published book on the topic.
In
response to both the paper and the book, a number of prominent

ADL expresses dismay to Ban over U.N. conference
NEW YORK (Press Release)— The
Anti-Defamation League (ADL) was "disappointed and dismayed" by U.N.
Secretary General Ban-Ki moon's welcoming remarks to a conference
organized by the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of
the Palestinian People, which has a history of singling out Israel for
undeserved criticism, attacks and boycott threats.
"The United Nations International
Conference of Civil Society in support of Israeli-Palestinian Peace,"
which concluded today in Brussels, involved workshops on "increasing the
resistance of the Israeli occupation" -- often the code for suicide
bombings against Israeli civilians -- and other actions and statements
aimed at de-legitimizing the Jewish state.
In a letter to Mr. Ban, ADL said
the conference's title was itself misleading, given the true objectives
and goals of its organizers and the Committee's past history of
anti-Israel broadsides.
"The agenda topics and the bulk of
the speakers reveal a pronounced and extreme anti-Israel slant," said
Glen S. Lewy, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National
Director. "The gathering, as well as the organizing body, is anything
but supportive of true Israeli-Palestinian peace. We are disappointed
and dismayed that the Secretary-General would see fit to engage with
such a one-sided and potentially damaging proceeding."
ADL urged the Secretary-General to
issue a declaration "that the Committee's work is at odds with the
United Nations policy and undermines efforts to promote
Palestinian-Israeli reconciliation," noting that a 2005 conference
hosted by the Committee adopted an action plan which called for a year
of "a global campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions" against
Israel.
On August 15, the League wrote to the European Parliament
President, Professor Dr. Hans-Gert Pottering, calling on the parliament
to reconsider permitting its facilities in Brussels to be used for the
conference.

StandWithUs urges
followers to fax Sarkozy letters
concerning death of Mohammed
al-Dura
LOS ANGELES (Press Release) –
The Israel advocacy group,
StandWithUs, is urging its
supporters to send a letter to
France’s President Nicolas
Sarkozy concerning the court
case over French television
coverage of the death of the
youth, Mohammed al-Dura, before
the Second Intifada. The
organization released the
following sample letter,
suggesting it be sent to Sarkozy
via Facsimile: 011 33 1 47 42 24
65
Dear President Sarkozy:
Congratulations on your
election.
We are a group of concerned
American citizens appealing to
you for support relative to
serious misrepresentations made
by French state TV broadcasting
and more specifically to the
Mohammed al-Dura fraud case. On
September 12, 2007, Philippe
Karsenty of Paris will present
his appeal of a 2006 judgment
against him for defamation
rendered in favour of Charles
Enderlin, Jerusalem Bureau Chief
for France 2, and the television
station responsible for airing
the Mohammed al-Dura hoax.
At issue is the alleged killing
of a Palestinian boy, Mohammed
al-Dura, who became a symbol of
the "2nd intifada." It is
obvious that the film in which
he supposedly "dies" is a
forgery. France 2 is holding 27
minutes of raw footage of the
incident, which could resolve
the controversy once and for
all, but if refuses to do so.
France 2 published a fabricated
and misleading photo that
launched a worldwide upheaval
resulting in at least 500
deaths, and rage throughout the
Muslim world. Moreover, the
al-Dura scam has successfully
established a pattern for many
other fabricated revenge
atrocities. Daniel Pearl was
killed to avenge al-Dura.
Pearl's killers used al-Dura's
image in the video of Pearl's
murder. Osama bin Laden invoked
the "dead" child's name in
recruitment videos in a
celebratory fashion after 9/11.
The verdict rendered in
Philippe Karsenty's al-Dura
trial in September of 2006 was
clearly a miscarriage of
justice. Philippe Karsenty's
appeal is scheduled for trial on
September 12, 2007. It is very
disconcerting that a journalist
acting in good faith by
attempting to establish the
truth relative to an issue of
tremendous importance would end
up having to defend himself
twice.
We clearly are not suggesting
that anyone interfere with the
course of justice. We are
writing to bring this important
matter to your attention and are
sincerely hoping that France 2
will finally admit to the fraud,
release the withheld footage,
and that Philippe Karsenty will
be absolved of defamation, and
therefore France 2 will be
recognized as being responsible
for the fraud which it has
perpetrated upon the entire
world.

Female
combat doctor becomes an Israeli legend
By
Elad Shalev
JERUSALEM (Press Release)—Dr. Captain Kaminski was
amongst the thousands of IDF combat soldiers fighting in
the Lebanese town of Bint Jbeil and while under fire
worked to save the lives of those same soldiers. "This
is how the battalion becomes part of your family," she
said, discussing her time served as the unit's combat
doctor in the "Bukaim" Battalion of the Armor Corps
during the Second Lebanon War.
Lieutenant Ariel Gino, team commander in the Egoz
Battalion of the Golani Brigade and one of the prominent
heroes of the Second Lebanon war, was shot in the face
by a Hezbollah sniper during combat. The troops under
his command placed him in a tank-bulance (a tank fitted
as an ambulance for evacuating and treating wounded
troops during combat operations) and transported him to
the Rambam hospital in Haifa. Dr. Kaminski treated
Gino while inside the tank-bulance. Her patient was
close to death. She immediately administered an oxygen
mask and morphine drip and dressed the wounds. "A
doctor is not a god, he just tries to do what he knows,
but he cannot do everything," said Marina. She
returned to the battlefield in Bint Jbeil that same day,
after completing the evacuation and care of Lieutenant
Gino by helicopter, thereby saving his life.
Six
years ago, when Marina Kaminski was in Russia, her
country of origin, she decided to follow her family and
immigrate to Israel. Following her emigration she
volunteered to serve the IDF as a combat doctor. She
quickly went from being a talented doctor in the Russian
military hospitals to becoming a renowned doctor in the
Israel Defense Forces. "I don't see how being a woman
changes anything. I am a combat soldier
Marina Kaminsky
like every other combat doctor. Obviously, I don't have
a high physical fitness as a Paratroop Corps doctor, but
I am sure I am as strong as some of them," added
Kaminski. Following completion of the Medical
Officers' Course with honors, Kaminski fought her way
into becoming the highest ranking female doctor in the
IDF. In 2005, Kaminski took part in combat operations
on the axis routes in the Palestinians territories. In
a number of instances, she treated both Israeli soldiers
and Palestinian civilians injured in the field. These
incidents present only further proof of the great work
she has done in her position as combat doctor.
Kaminski's moment of truth came in July of last year, a
year and two months after beginning her duty as combat
doctor. The Bokim Battalion entered Lebanese territory
on the first day of the war and was involved in combat
operations in Kanatra, Maroun-A-Ras and the town of
Bint Jbeil. Her entrance into Lebanon, with the troops
of the battalion, signaled an anomaly Kaminsky never
thought would occur. "There is a law that states that
women are not allowed to enter Lebanese territory during
war. When my entrance into Lebanon was first
forbidden, I informed my commanders that if I took upon
myself a position in the battalion, my gender should not
play a role. There would be no way I would leave my
soldiers behind," she stressed. In the end Marina
received permission to enter Lebanon and to accompany
her battalion in a tank-bulance. Marina came very
close to getting injured during combat, after Hezbollah
operatives fired AT-3 Sagar anti- tank guided missiles
at the building her battalion was using as a
stronghold. The destruction was catastrophic; two
soldiers were killed and more were wounded; many were in |
